Pyracantha

Pyracantha

Coccinea leylandii

pyracantha-bee-cu-webIn spring they flower profusely with beautiful white blossoms, in fall they are bursting with thousands of bright orange berries. Pyracantha is a semi-evergreen shrub also called “Firethorn.”

Some species have sharp thorns along the branches which make them a good plant for creating privacy. That may be why they are often seen in parking lots, along the side of the road and around many public buildings.

Birds love pyracantha berries and, contrary to popular belief, these berries are not poisonous to humans. They are in the family Rosaceae, along with apples, plums, and strawberries, etc., and can be used to make a tart jam or jelly.
